Graduation from ES2007S :)

~Click on VITAMIN C to view video & lyrics~

Goodbye ES2007S ! Although I bid adieus to you now, the things you have taught me have left an indelible mark in my view and understanding of what communication is.

I signed myself up for this module because a friend of mine recommended it, it was non-examinable, and the name of the module sounded really professional, for a lack of word! "Perhaps I'll be able to learn something that will help me in my Final Year Project presentation", I thought. I did learn more about the intricacies and subtle details of presentation skills, but it's not just that. 'Professional Communication' was not just about learning how to give an excellent presentation; for myself,  It has taught me how to communicate with my loved-ones, peers, and superiors more effectively.

Communication tools
The communication tools discussed in class, ranging from written communication i.e. the 7 C's, to non-verbal communication i.e. active listening, body language, form the basic of communication. Building on top of this foundation, I learnt how to be aware and sensitive of different cultural practices through the discussion on inter-cultural communication in class and the blogs of my peers. Using the tool of the 7C's, I had the chance of putting it into practical application through blogging, and writing of resumes, application letter, minutes, interview transcripts, and finally, the group proposal.

Blogging has given me an avenue of expressing my thoughts and feelings in an uninterrupted fashion. It has honed my language skills. and given me a chance to reflect on issues, structure my thoughts and finally, express them in a way that is coherent and understandable to my readers.

Learning on the Job
In my first post of my blog, I mentioned that effective communication is important because misunderstandings always arise due to the lack of it. Working together in a same group with people of different personalities, I have learnt to be more flexible, learnt to accommodate and adapt myself to different individuals' working styles, and learnt NOT to make assumptions and to always clarify.

Having experienced it first-hand, I have observed that the working dynamics of a team can be quite amazing - both in my peer teaching group as well as in Dandelion Student Impact Team. Developing rapport with fellow team members can be developed through spending time together, talking about subjects other than our assignment, and bantering with each other. Then somewhere in the beginning and in between, respect and empathy comes into the picture to further strengthen this bond. I am thankful to have the chance Yong Chean, Yong Xin, and You Sheng (Y.Y.Y.D), who are all very capable students in their own right.

Learning in Class
My lecturer (Mr. Blackstone) created a learning environment that stimulates students to express their honest thoughts/feedback, and this has prodded me to be more honest with mine - be it my opinions or emotions i.e. frustration, stress, euphoria. As a result, I have learnt to better articulate my opinions and to manage my emotions for the purpose of communicating more effectively and hence, build better interpersonal relationships with my loved-ones, peers and superiors. As a future teacher, I am inspired to create a learning environment 'without walls', as my lecturer has successfully done so.

  1. hi red,

so what was so professional about it that you'd liked? haha...

why do i feel like the bulk of the post was about our project group? haha.. we must have really taugh you a bit about communication eh. but still, cannot solve our IPI. you still have much to learn my young padawan (2nd time i used that!!).

anyway.. your post is a very good summary of what has transpired over the last 13 weeks. Indeed many friendship have been built and exsisting ones strengthened even more (I hope).

it is all concluded very concisely and there is a clear trend of thought that makes it easy to follow.

we do assume and expect different things when we go into any sort of exchange don't we (communication being an exchange of ideas and opinions)? I think expectations are good, just try not to have them set to high. Like i always tell myself when i'm studying, (yes i talk to myself and am seeking psychiatric treament) study like you'd expect to get an A but when the results come out dont expect anything just be grateful. Not sure if that is good advice thou.. haha!! like i said i need therapy.. haha..

Well it was certainly a pleasure getting to know you. and maybe i'll see you around.. :)

p.s try not to sleep so late all the time yah.. 0117H is not very early you know.. :)

    cheers..

  2. Thanks again, Steph, for another clear, concise post. As Daniel states, it seems that much of the focus here is on the skills developed and practiced in your prject group. You call them "people" skills, but of course they fall within the more general category of communication skills as well. Maybe you intend to differentiate between the basic skills such as writing and managing, planning and organziaing, those mentioned in our last discussion of transferable skills, and the more specific interpersonal skills. In any case, as a teacher I'm rewarded when students such as yourself are able to see a real value in what we have done in class as it relates to their learning and future needs.

Best of luck as you continue your life's journey!

  3. Hi Steph
What I like about your blog post is the way you lay out the format, such as the use of headings and capitalization. Like Dan says, I can feel that it sums up your experience with the course. While this module is defintely not the only one we experience(or suffer) different people with different personality and styles, I do think it does allow us to express ourselves freely and honestly. I guess the wall-less approach by Brad did the wonder! =)
Like you, I too find relationships important to us, and they are sometimes difficult to handle. Often, the more important they are, the tighter we pull on the reins; sometimes, we may just end up tightening the kink and worsen the tangle. So, letting go may just get us the best outcome that we wished for. ;)
Hope I did not sound to therapeutic, and see you around soon!
    Cheers
    Wee Boon

  4. Hi steph, I agree with you about the learning of people skills. Like Brad said, you write clearly and concisely about that as you suggested a few interesting and vital anecdotes about why this was so..

I would just like to add that in terms of communication, I find that you're gradually becoming more confident in speaking, and your writing(in general) e.g. blog posts and proposal has gradually become clearer, more structured. Having edited some of your blog posts, I realise you have gradually expanded on a repertoire of vocabulary that is more varied, apt and unique!

In working with you during the proposal, you have also communicated more proactively and I can see how you have been both a good team player and leader. These are some of your strengths that I reckon may be unseen and I would like to give you credit and encouragement where you so deserve! =)

  5. "Graduation (Friends Forever)"

And so we talked all night about the rest of our lives
Where we're gonna be when we turn 25
I keep thinking times will never change
Keep on thinking things will always be the same
But when we leave this year we won't be coming back
No more hanging out cause we're on a different track
And if you got something that you need to say
You better say it right now cause you don't have another day
Cause we're moving on and we can't slow down
These memories are playing like a film without sound
And I keep thinking of that night in June
I didn't know much of love
    But it came too soon
And there was me and you
And then we got real blue
Stay at home talking on the telephone
And we would get so excitedand we'd get so scared
Laughing at ourselves thinking life's not fair
And this is how it feels

    [1]
    As we go on
    We remember
    All the times we
    Had together
    And as our lives change
    From whatever
    We will still be
    Friends Forever

So if we get the big jobs
And we make the big money
    When we look back now
Will our jokes still be funny?
Will we still remember everything we learned in school?
Still be trying to break every single rule
Will little brainy Bobby be the stockbroker man?
Can Heather find a job that won't interfere with her tan?
I keep, keep thinking that it's not goodbye
Keep on thinking it's a time to fly
And this is how it feels

    [Repeat 1]

    La, la, la, la:
    Yeah, yeah, yeah
    La, la, la, la:
We will still be friends forever

Will we think about tomorrow like we think about now?
Can we survive it out there?
    Can we make it somehow?
I guess I thought that this would never end
And suddenly it's like we're women and men
Will the past be a shadow that will follow us 'round?
Will these memories fade when I leave this town
I keep, keep thinking that it's not goodbye
Keep on thinking it's a time to fly

    [Repeat 1 (3x)]

  7. @ Daniel: Have been trying to sleep earlier you know. Why am I red now?? Lol. Yes I do agree with you, that we all have certain expectations when going into any exchange. Even with strangers, you'd expect them to be courteous, if not friendly. I think 'Professional' Communication is kind of like a misnomer now that I think about it...Well, it applies to to our proposal research, oral discussion, oral presentation, writing of resume and cover letters. But I think professional communication is a small segment of what this module is about, isn't it? Thanks for the tip about studying...don't worry, I talk to myself when I study too. Maybe we can seek Wee Boon for some therapeutic help.

It was a pleasure getting to know you too Mr. Seet. You have brought much fun, joy and laughter to the class and our group. You can't expect to run away from us now that this module is over do you. Do come for post-exam outing! This is my 2nd shout-out to you :)

PS: You actually copied-and-pasted the song. Thanks for the effort! I miss the old school songs!!

  8. Brad : Thank you! I hear you, and in order not to do this course injustice, I've added some other learning pointers. You indeed taught me much. And I've expressed my thoughts in the last paragraph of my post!

  9. @ Wee Boon: Haha you sound therapeutic? No, you didn't. Hmmm. But we do need therapy once in a while! Maybe Daniel can be your first customer and I'll be your second.

  10. @ You Sheng: Thank you for your encouragement! :)

  11. @ YYK: Me too! I will..but maybe soon, I'll be wishing, " I can't wait to graduate!" Take care yeah :)

  12. As always, Steph, you are polite, elegant and focused. These were well portrayed through your this final (I hope not!) blog post.

I would like to take this opportunity to present a little peer review if you don’t mind: D (to show my utmost respect of you and my gratitude of your bribe(s))

Stephanie (or rather strawberry as she is infamously known within our circle) has a certain likeability to her personality. She exudes decency and friendliness, traits that not many of us carry.

During the course of our working together, Stephanie has demonstrated strong initiative, reliability and commitment to her role. She would initiate meetings, be the first to take on responsibility and follow up on her actions. Her work was exemplary, on time and served as guidelines for our perusal. Despite a busy schedule and tired nights, she did not try to attend our online meetings. She made sure she was there. She was engaging and immersed in working on our proposal, proofreading all of our parts.

It is no secret that I will hire Stephanie for sure if she decided to leave MOE in the future. :D
I shall not divulge too much positive remarks about her on her blog (can’t praise her too much or she’ll act bossy :P) but if you wish to request a comprehensive peer review, yours truly will be more than happy to provide.
It was fun having Stephanie in our group. She was often the ‘boss’ in our team and the best part is that we get to ‘discuss’ about her particular fondness of her computer.

Nonetheless, Stephanie is no angel. She is good with threats and bribes. And we all have fallen victims to her manipulation.

  13. cos strawberries are red? unless of cos they're not ripe yet... :)

i didnt take her bribes!! ahaha!!! tsk tsk the rest of you... =D

  14. Haha, I'm amazed by your peer reviews. Not bad wor. :)

  15. And "I can't wait to graduate..." - I'll be back to hear you say it! :D

    ReplyDelete
  16. @ Yong Xin: You meant " she did try to attend our online meetings" right..Haha. I really did try my best to, although I may have been late for some.

Sigh..Imagine, needing to 'bribe' my group mates with ice-cream to do their job (Daniel managed to resist it because of his strict no-fat diet restrictions yet eats fried dory for lunch) . It worked! But seriously, you guys have been like, highly self-motivated and responsible people - not to mention hilarious at some points with the stuff discussed (latest Mac products..)- leaving You Sheng and I contented to eat our food and stare at our reliable laptops. I still appreciate my 'computer', although I will most probably have to change it soon.

Thank you for your good words! I can catch your well intentions behind your sarcasm. :)I guess i'm guilty of 'threatening' my group members to stop 'complimenting' my 'computer'. They can get overboard with their comments sometimes. The audacity of some Mac-users.

  17. is yyknosekai Yong Kiat??? Hello, greetings from Singapore! How's Oxford? Having winter? God bless yea =D

    Hi Stephanie,

When I was reading your post, I can't help but recalled all our memories in this module. The Vitamin C song further enhanced the effect...lol...

There's a strong personal touch in each of your post, and it was something that I've tried to do, but with little success =_=! Somehow, most of my posts are rather impersonal... I should really learn from you =D

I like having you in the team. Somehow, you are kind of the middle person between me and You Sheng during our first meeting of trying to structure our presentation. We must have frustrated you, though you don't seem to be someone who is easily irritated. =D

I have an invitation here. Not sure how busy will you be for the next semester...but no harm asking i guess...Will you like to consider if you will like to join me in organising BioBiz 2011? You can go to our website http://biobiz.sg to find out more =D It's a platform for you to practice and learn more on communication skills and corporate event-organizing skills, and I think it will be something that value-add to you as well. Of course, at the same time, from the experience I worked with you, I trust that your commitment and diligence will be an asset to our team. =D Let me know if you are interested, and perhaps I can let you know more about the conference =D
